Ultrasounds are another popular imaging tool, similar to MRI, that's used in radiology diagnostics. Ultrasounds can also be referred to as sonography, but it essential works by using high frequency sound waves to produce images of your body. There are pretty much no known risks, so it's a great option for an imaging procedure. Here are the most common reasons to get an ultrasound:
This is probably the most common and most well known reason for getting an ultrasound. This tool is great for getting a good image of a woman's ovaries and uterus, and it's especially useful when examining the baby. It even produces hard copy images of the baby's ultrasound for safe keeping!
2. Gallbladder diseases
If you need diagnostic tests for possible gallbladder problems, ultrasounds are the most commonly used and suggested tool. They're great at picking up images of very small gallstones that may otherwise go unnoticed or not show symptoms of disease, but ultrasounds aren't always they best for diagnosing inflammation of the gallbladder.
3. Blood flow in vessels
The types of ultrasounds used for this common reason of checking the flow of blood in vessels are called vascular ultrasounds. They're great because they pick up on the soft tissues that aren't as easily seen in other imaging techniques and give a good evaluation of the circulatory system. Making sure blood flow is normal and detecting blockages or clots is incredibly important, especially for preventative measures against concerns like heart attacks.
4. Cancers and tumors
Ultrasounds can produce clear images of soft tissues in the body, some of which may include cancerous tissues or tumors that other imaging techniques can't (similar to the use of vascular ultrasounds). They can even help a doctor in the biopsy procedure because the exact location of the tumor can be seen thanks to the ultrasound.
If you have imaging needs for one of these common reasons, you could be the perfect candidate for an ultrasound. Talk to your doctor about your options and if we can help you with your imaging needs, just give us a call!
